This started as a news-report-inspired Bob Dylan parody, delivered by some form of robot. It used to sound very different when we played it as a full band. On this version, the piano part is influenced by 'Erlkonig' (Alder King) by Franz Schubert from 1815, which in turn was inspired by a poem of the same name by Goethe (1782) which in it's turn was adapted from an old traditional Danish ballad called 'Elveskud'. They all depict the death of a child who is haunted by the Fairy King.
lyrics
Fire on the mountain, pirates on the sea
Why's everybody always picking on me?
Ruins in the desert, island made of trees
The wound of hell cuts Ethiopian scree
Mourning for the husband, paint your houses white
Pulling with the left hand, pushing with the right
Coffin made of cardboard, decorate with chalk
Tattoo the face with glasses, take a walk into the dark
Those brave souls who carry the dead
Those brave souls who carried the dead
The Great War, the Christians, the Muslims, the Plague
Water and uranium, people drowned on land
Burning through the concrete, rushing through the sand
Shaking the foundations, covered by the sea
Break the composition of the garden, rocks and trees
Those brave souls who carry the dead
In gas-masks, with spraypaint, in orange and red
Those brave souls who carried the dead
Red Cross, Red Crescent, blood moon, blood red!
